Despite government propaganda to the contrary, illiteracy rates among rural Quechuas are high. At Mosoj Chaski we are particularly concerned about the illiteracy in the Quechua Churches because this affects the spiritual maturity of the believers. If a believer cannot read the Word of God, he is unable to feed himself spiritually, making him totally dependent on receiving teaching in church meetings or by means of Mosoj Chaski radio. While Mosoj Chaski has been a big help to these isolated believers, we recognize that there is no substitute for each believer being able to read God’s Word for himself.

“Pakitu,” the Mosoj Chaski Literacy Program provides training so that facilitators can teach a group of people to read. We have also prepared primers and other literacy material along with teaching aids that include games, and simple reading books.
In the past several years this ministry has languished due to the difficulty of finding a suitable person to do the training and prepare new materials. Despite the lack of personnel, these literacy materials have been used extensively by Christians in certain areas of the country. However, we knew that Pakitu had the potential to have a much greater impact. So, in August of 2008 a young lady was hired and she has begun promoting the ministry and teaching training courses.

In addition to the training courses, she is also writing radio programs to encourage people to learn to read and to awaken the churches to their responsibility to help their illiterate, or semi-literate members to learn to read God’s Word. We are excited at the potential for this ministry.
